How to Avoid Being Victim of Branded Fragrances

“As I went to Body Shop, it took me lotta minutes to think what to buy. When I got to Gramedia, I wrapped three novels and two frogs right away..”

If you do need a lotion, make the priority that you’re gonna purchase a lotion, not just a soap bar.

My friend, Liv, 25, tweeted it yesterday and made me smiled. She wasn’t the only one of my colleagues which trapped by Body Shop’s promo.

Body Shop held a sale season two weeks recently in Indonesiea. They sold certain products more cheaply, in term and conditions applied. Discount would be reached if you buy at least two different products, and you could get the discount if you were a member of their club.

If you don’t really like strawberry smell, don’t you insist to buy even though the store offer it in USD 1.

My fellas were dying to shop there. Another friend of mine, Aimee, 26, even borrowed my club card to get discount. She even texted other friends, for offering if some of them wanna buy Body Shop during the sale.

Problem came when none of those friends responsed. Coz, though it was already discounted, it still costed a lot for their pocket. In fact, Aimee had wanted to buy Moroccan Rose eau de toilette. I advised her to buy the eau de toilette, then she bought another item that she liked. It failed coz she could only afford one.

While Pippa, 25, had been longing to the promotion. So she got to the store, then she tried a tester. Hm..this one smells good. Second tester. Hm..this one smells less. Back to the first tester. Yeah, this one really smells nice. But costs a lot. Third tester. Wherr..this one’s entrancing so much! How much is it? wonder, it’s so expensive! Err..but it’s discounted, isn’t it? And after it’s discounted, costs too much.

But this is sale, isn’t it? And the sale doesn’t come up monthly, do it? I’ll miss the chance to have it if I don’t buy now.  Finally Pippa bought the second tester’s product coz it’s cheaper. Walked home, still she wasn’t satisfied. I think this one doesn’t smell that good..

Before you’re dropped of shopping, open up the online catalogue, then select all of your taste and pick which one that you’re afford more at.

The next day I asked her, “So? Did you buy it?”

Pippa: “Yes, and I wear it now.”

I snuffed her neck. “’s nice.”

Pippa: “I didn’t spray it on my neck, I sprayed it on my armpit. You’ve just already smelled my soap!”

I’m so entranced and I also envy to see how clever Body Shop designed their promotion to make their store looked enchanting and exclusive. They made lotta campaigns to make consumer felt so proud to wear their products, and made female who couldn’t buy theirs became envy. Then in certain seasons, they would put down their product’s price little, made unable females finally attacked their stores for sale. And funny, sometimes thoes female didn’t know what they wanna buy. Was it the body lotion? Was it the eau de toilette? Was it the body butter? Did they want the floral fragrance or fruity ones? Sometimes I laughed to see them carrying a paper bag which only filled with a soap bar. Just another brand victim.

By the way, Liv, Pippa and Aimee aren’t their original names.

Here are some tips if you wanna purchase fragrances:

  1. Decide what you wanna buy. It’s not about the brand, but it’s about whether you need the item or not. If you do need a lotion, make the priority that you’re gonna purchase a lotion, not just a soap bar.
  2. Be honest to yourself. Do you wanna buy a strawberry eau de toilette coz you love its smell, or is it just due to its cheaper price? If you don’t really like strawberry smell, don’t you insist to buy even though the store offer it in USD 1.
  3. Indeed, it really sucks if you’re like me, which thanks to my Gemini zodiac, make me love all kinds of fragrance! Then the problem is not about taste, but it tends to be about finance. So before you’re dropped of shopping, open up the online catalogue, then select all of your taste and pick which one that you’re afford more at. So you don’t need to consume your time of loading on the store by guessing which product is cheaper and smells nicer.
  4. Answer me, why do you wanna buy fragrances? Is it coz you love the feeling when you’re praised by someone else coz you smell so good, or is it coz you love the excitation you feel when you’ve already worn fragrance? If the second reason is yours, you don’t need to feel panic when you’ve put your perfume and then you find out that nobody praise your fragrance.
  5. Remember that eau de perfume lasts for 4-5 hours, eau de toilette for 2-3 hours, and body mist for an hour. Those number will decrease if you do activities in hot sunny day (e.g walking across the street), or if your sweat glands overact. So, if you just have lunch at a cafe on a pedestrian of a street which dusty and full of vehicle smokes, why da heck should you wear eau de toilette??

Kayaknya Mbak Nique cuman butuh wewangian buat naikin mood aja ya, bukan buat diendus-endus orang lain.. 😀

This post reminds me of Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsela 😛

All they need to see is “DISCOUNT” written big at the front of the shop, and the shopaholics automatically think, “oooh i can save some money” … NOT! hehe.. 😛

above all, the body shop marketing techniques are outstanding..

      May 02, 2011 @ 20:08:22

Nope. It’s useless to believe that discount is an opportunity for saving 😀

I also agree that their techniques are outstanding.
      1. Make product which looks exclusive and smells really good, at least smells long enough.
      2. Use the last customers they have to attract any other customers, simply with membership system, follower, and so on.
      3. Put the price in unbargainable level, and in some certain occasion, put sale season to make the prices seem bargainable, and’ll get the booming profit.
      4. Use this 2.0 marketing for promotion. Twitter, newsletter, Facebook, are best equipment for selling things.
Are those hard to be imitated?

Hahaha… poor them… dying to buy something just because the brand, not because they need it. I can go if they buy something they need it, and also they concern to brand of the product. It will give them a good product with the reasonable price. hehehe…

Pas baca, kebanyakan dari produknya mereka bertahan beberapa jam… busyet. Rexona For Men gua aja bisa tahan sampai lebih dari 6 jam… i even put it on my armpits.

Cowok kan, orientasi fungsi. Lha cewek kan, orientasi bungkus..
Makanya sedikit cowok yang ngejar-ngejar produk demi merk. Gw nggak kaget Ellious udah cukup puas dengan Rexona for Men-nya. 🙂

sehebat apa toh the body shop itu? aku belum pernah coba pake produk2nya. btw ini punyaku yg altamoda tinggal dikit. nanti kalo udah abis, boleh ngincipi deh parfumnya the body shop. tapi aku nggak ngerti masing2 produknya kayak gimana, kamu aja yg milihkan ya? pilih yg mana yg kira2 cocok sama aku, pilih yg mana yg kamu suka.

Yang pasti Mas jangan pake yang Moroccan Rose, jangan pake Wild Cherry, jangan pake Japanese Bloom, apalagi pake yang Love ETC..

Perasaan Body Shop nggak punya parfum buat cowok deh. Paling-paling adanya ya maksimal deodorant atau eau de toilette..

Mas, Mas pake yang kemaren-kemaren aja udah harum kok. Aku udah seneng.. 🙂

Okay…1st of all… I love BodyShop. Even though yeah for OUR buying market their products are a lil bit expensive…but… (since I did make a research about BodyShop brand for my paper) it still make sense to me why their products cost that much.
Well that is my argument for defending BodyShop brand 😀

But okay….I agree with you Vick, but please don’t blame BodyShop for how smart they are on their campaign or whatever to increase their selling.

Some days ago, I had a friend who bought 3 BodyShop shower gel (on that sale event) ONLY for her. You know how much they cost right? Even though I love BodyShop, it still doesn’t make sense to me why she bought 3 different fragranced shower gel WHICH not all the 3 of them smell too nice (at least for my opinion).
I did ask her why she bought those 3 shower gels (considering I knew her monthly paycheck which actually not satisfy enough). And she said, “oohh I run out of soap/shower gel at home”.
LOL. I knew this friend for quite a long time. And I know that she bought those shower gels, just because of the brand (and of course the prestige) not because she need them or she usually only using BodyShop products for her beauty care. So when someone come to her place and see her stuffs in the bathroom, they will think that she USED TO using expensive products. For what? So people will think she’s pretty rich? Come oooonn…her paycheck is not even big for Bandung’s salary standart. Now that is what I will say loudly STUPID BUYER.

As I came up to buy bath items, I always thought, “Do I need this? Why do I buy this just for shower? Doesn’t my shower cream in my apartment smell good enough for me?”

I believe your friend wasn’t confident enough about herself, Syelly. I guess she believed that the common soap didn’t smell nice on her. Where did she work? Rubbish recycling industry?

Or I think, probably you guess it’s true that she’s just crazy about the brand. She might’ve bought it just for impressing YOU. So when you come to her place, you’ll think that she use expensive soaps. But when you’ll have left her place, she’ll keep those shower gels inside her drawer and replace them with Camay or Lifebuoy for her daily shower.. =))

Some people just like to buy branded stuffs only for the prestige and just you know….they believe those expensive things can give them more self-esteem or self-confident.

The eyeshadow is good tho. seriously. it’s really… what u call it? vibrant? X)
Other than that, I dunno. I never buy the beauty product. Waaaay too expensive for me. I got an almond body butter from my aunt, and really, I get a little bit sick of the fragrance. I can tolerate white musk and moon flower, and totally head over heel if I found some guy wears Of a Man, hahahaha…

And how do you think about it? ;-)
